As part of a three-day Infrastructure Excursion, students from the Master’s programme in Civil Engineering Sciences – Infrastructure visited a range of significant infrastructure projects and technical facilities in western Austria, providing them with valuable practical insights beyond the classroom.
Highlights included a visit to the Steinbrückenbach Valley Bridge reconstruction project on the A10 Tauern Motorway, where students learned about an innovative bridge rehabilitation method applied for the first time in Europe. Another key destination was the Brenner Base Tunnel, providing insights into one of Europe’s largest transport infrastructure projects and its role in promoting sustainable freight transport.
Further stops included TRM (Tiroler Rohre GmbH), where students explored modern manufacturing and testing processes, and the Innsbruck Wastewater Treatment Plant, which offered an overview of sustainable wastewater management. The excursion concluded with a technical tour of Innsbruck’s Hungerburgbahn, a hybrid funicular railway, where participants gained first-hand insights into the operation of this architecturally distinctive and technically sophisticated transport system.
The three-day excursion successfully combined academic learning with practical experience, allowing students to gain valuable perspectives on contemporary infrastructure planning, construction, and operation. The Institute of Railway Engineering and Transport Economics (EBW) thanks all hosts for their hospitality and informative presentations, with special thanks to TRM for the dinner and enjoyable evening.
